Sometimes I Wish I Was A Bartender

I want to start this post off by saying that I love bartenders. I respect them and the job they have to do. I am by no means attempting to degrade or downplay the bartending profession. This post is actually my way of communicating my envy of the role of a bartender.  Now on to my post…

Have you ever had one of those days/weeks/months/years where you find yourself just looking to get away, more specifically, away from your job? Away from the constant demand of your time, the responsibility, the daily battles with coworkers and bosses, the ridiculous BS that you have to deal with day in and day out. I know I have.

For the most part, I enjoy responsibility, accountability, and the demands of being a contributor to your company and/or place of business. I actually strive to increase my responsibility, or in other words, my impact to the company I work for. I like challenges, projects that require me to think and learn and be on my toes, but sometimes, I just wish I could trade it all in for a much simpler, less complex job.

Enter - the bartender.

A bartending job is simple enough for me to get away from the complexities of “how can we increase revenue in this target market by Q2″ type of demands, while still give me the ability to interact with others. I think that becoming a bartender would be a great job for me. I love talking to people, I can handle customers, and I think it would be cool to expand my drink making skills.

Being a bartender wouldn’t require the same level of deep thinking, responsibility, or even variety of demands as my current role does. I also wouldn’t have deal with as much of the BS that is required to make simple decisions. No going up three levels for a simple “can we make this shot” decision, nope I can make it right there on the spot with complete autonomy.

Bartenders have fun too. I can’t remember the last time I had FUN working at my job. I am not sure how many people can classify their profession as fun, but normally they are the lucky ones. And hey - bartenders can pull in some good money.

So while I sit here, dreaming about leaving it all to become a bartender, preferably in Colorado or maybe even Mexico, I wonder - what is your dream “Getaway Job”?

My dream “Getaway Job” would be a dog walker. There are so many reason I would enjoy this job. Here are just a few:

    1) There is no real thinking involved.
    2) I love dogs.
    3) I love exercising.
    4) I can be outdoors.
    4) I can socialize with other people.

Try it. It’s really not much fun after you do it for awhile. Trust me - “Been There, Done That” and everything is always greener on the other side. Good fantasy post though!

A professional dancer would be cool too. I would need to know how to dance though, which could be a problem. :)
